Motorola's new mid-ranger promises a 200 MP camera, a very bright screen and military-grade toughness. Is that enough to make it your next phone?

Motorola's mid-range G series has always rested on one idea: as much phone as possible for as little money as possible. The new Moto G87 keeps that tradition alive but adds a few unexpected trump cards — a 200 MP camera, a very bright AMOLED screen and military-grade durability.

Display

The G87 has a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen with a 120 Hz refresh rate and FHD+ (1272 × 2772) resolution. Its brightest feature is literal: Motorola quotes a peak brightness of up to 5000 nits, so readability under harsh sunlight should not be a problem. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i, and audio comes from stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos.

Camera

The main module is a 200 MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and optical image stabilisation (OIS). In daylight it captures detailed, sharp photos with good dynamic range. Next to it sits an 8 MP ultrawide lens that is, unfortunately, noticeably weaker: even in daylight shots show noise and blur. On the front there is a 32 MP selfie camera.

Performance and battery

Inside is a MediaTek Dimensity 6400 chip (6 nm), 8 or 12 GB of RAM and 256 or 512 GB of storage that can be expanded with a microSD card. This is no performance champion: it has enough power for everyday tasks, but for demanding games the processor is modest. The 5200 mAh battery easily lasts a full day, while 30 W wired charging is average for this class.

Durability

This is where the G87 genuinely stands out: IP68/IP69 protection against dust and water, MIL-STD-810H compliance and resistance to drops from 1.2 m. The back is finished in eco-leather, and the phone weighs just 183 g. It is one of the toughest phones in its price range.

Who is it for?

The Moto G87 with Android 16 is a solid choice for anyone who wants a rugged phone with a bright screen and a strong main camera. That said, the modest chip and the price (around 300–350 €) mean it is worth comparing against rivals such as the Samsung Galaxy A57 or Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 before you buy. Compared with its predecessor, the Moto G86, the main changes are the 200 MP camera and an even brighter screen. It is also worth remembering that Motorola offers more modest update support in the mid-range than some rivals. You will find all Motorola phones in our catalogue.
