Design & build
Both meet MIL-STD-810 durability standards and survive 100 m of water. The Galaxy Watch Ultra uses a grade-4 titanium frame with a sapphire crystal and weighs about 60 g — premium and polished. The Instinct 3 is plastic-heavy with a metal-reinforced bezel; it feels more utilitarian but takes knocks without complaint and sits lighter on the wrist.
Display
Here the philosophies split. The Galaxy Watch Ultra has a bright 1.5-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen (480 × 480) that looks fantastic for maps and notifications. The Instinct 3 comes in two flavours: a colour AMOLED version, or a Solar model with Garmin's classic memory-in-pixel screen that stays readable in direct sun and charges from daylight.
Fitness & health tracking
This is Garmin's home turf. In side-by-side outdoor tests the Instinct 3 logged more accurate distance, pace and elevation, while the Galaxy Watch Ultra has been caught inflating climb data. Smart features
The Galaxy Watch Ultra is a proper smartwatch — Wear OS with the full app store, LTE for calls and texts without your phone, Google and Samsung Pay, plus a speaker and microphone. The Instinct 3 keeps things narrow: notifications, Garmin Pay and offline music on some models, but no app ecosystem and no LTE. If you want a phone on your wrist, that gap matters.
Battery life
No contest. The Galaxy Watch Ultra manages roughly 2–3 days of normal use, or up to 100 hours in power-saving mode. The Instinct 3 AMOLED runs up to 18–24 days in smartwatch mode; the Solar version can reach 40 days and, in ideal sunlight, effectively never needs a charger. On a multi-day trip that difference is decisive.
Price & value
In the Baltics both land in a similar bracket — the Instinct 3 from around €239 and the Galaxy Watch Ultra from around €265, though both are frequently discounted. For the money, you are choosing priorities rather than paying more for something better.
Verdict
Pick the Garmin Instinct 3 if battery life and dependable outdoor tracking come first, or if you use an iPhone — it works with both platforms. Pick the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra if you own an Android phone and want a genuine smartwatch with apps, LTE and payments, and you are happy to charge it every couple of days. Once you know which side you are on, they rarely compete for the same buyer.
