Xiaomi Redmi 17: Does the Huge Battery Make Up for the Screen?

A massive 7500 mAh battery for around €165 — but is the screen compromise worth it? Here is what to know.

The Xiaomi Redmi 17 is the newest budget phone in the Redmi line-up, unveiled in August 2026. Its pitch is simple: a huge 7500 mAh battery and a starting price of around €165. But to hit that price, Xiaomi cut a few corners. It is worth knowing which ones.

Display: big, but not sharp

The Redmi 17 has a 6.9-inch IPS LCD with a 120Hz refresh rate and up to 825 nits of brightness, protected by Gorilla Glass 7i. The catch is the resolution — only HD+ (1600 × 720). That is a clear step back from the previous Full HD panels: text and images look softer, and heavy video watchers will notice it most.

Battery: the strong suit

This is where the Redmi 17 shines. The 7500 mAh battery is one of the largest in its price class and easily lasts two days. 45W wired charging refills it from 0 to 100% in about 96 minutes, while 22.5W reverse charging lets the phone top up your earphones or another device.

Performance

The 5G version runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chip paired with 4 or 6GB of RAM and 128 or 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage (expandable via microSD). It is not a gaming phone, but for everyday tasks — browsing, messaging, YouTube — it has enough in the tank. It ships with Android 16 and the HyperOS 3 interface.

Cameras and extras

Round the back sits a 50MP f/1.8 main camera, with an 8MP selfie shooter up front. Daylight shots are decent, low-light ones average — about what you would expect at this price. The nice touches: IP64 protection against dust and splashes, NFC for contactless payments, a side-mounted fingerprint reader and, rarely these days, a 3.5mm headphone jack. A Dynamic RGB light on the back flashes for calls and messages.

Who it is for

The Redmi 17 weighs 232g and is 8.8mm thick — not small, but that is the price of the battery. It is a solid pick for anyone after a cheap, long-lasting daily phone. If a sharper screen matters more, compare it with the slightly pricier Samsung Galaxy A27. Browse the full range in the smartphones section.
