Two phones sit at the very top of the 2026 flagship pile, and they could hardly be more different in philosophy. The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is a do-everything Android powerhouse with an S Pen and a 200MP camera; the Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max is the most refined, longest-lasting iPhone Apple has ever shipped. If you are choosing between the two best smartphones on the market right now, here is how they really differ.
Design & build
Apple made the bigger change this year. The 17 Pro Max drops the titanium frame for an aluminium unibody that is lighter and, Apple says, 20x more thermally conductive — which matters when you push the chip hard. The Galaxy S26 Ultra keeps its squared-off Ultra silhouette and titanium rails, and it remains the only one of the two with a built-in S Pen tucked into the body. Both are large 6.9-inch slabs; neither is a one-handed phone.
Display
On paper these are twins: both run a 6.9-inch OLED panel with a 1–120Hz variable refresh rate. Samsung pushes more pixels (1440 x 3120 vs Apple 1320 x 2868) and adds a genuinely new trick — a hardware Privacy Display that narrows the viewing angle so the person next to you on the bus cannot read your screen. Apple counters with a peak brightness of 3,000 nits and a new anti-reflective Ceramic Shield 2 front that is noticeably easier to read in direct sun.
Camera
This is where the gap is widest. The S26 Ultra throws hardware at the problem: a 200MP main sensor with a bright f/1.4 aperture, a 50MP ultrawide, a 50MP 5x periscope and a 12MP 3x telephoto, reaching up to 100x combined zoom. The iPhone 17 Pro Max simplifies — three 48MP Fusion cameras, with the telephoto now offering 4x optical and up to 8x optical-quality zoom, plus 4K120 Dolby Vision video that remains the benchmark for mobile filmmaking. Samsung wins on reach and flexibility; Apple wins on video and consistency.
Performance & battery
The Galaxy runs the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, roughly 19% faster on CPU than last year Ultra. The iPhone runs the A19 Pro with a vapor chamber, and it is the efficiency story that stands out: the 4,823mAh battery delivers the longest battery life of any iPhone to date. The Samsung 5,000mAh cell is good for a full day and charges faster — roughly 75% in half an hour — but the iPhone real-world endurance is the one to beat.
Price & value
At launch the S26 Ultra started around €1,449, but on PriceBee the lowest live listings already undercut the iPhone 17 Pro Max by a wide margin. If the current PriceBee gap holds, the Samsung is the clear value pick; the iPhone holds its price far better over time, which matters if you trade in every couple of years.
Verdict
Buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you want the most versatile camera, the S Pen, and the better price today. Buy the iPhone 17 Pro Max if you live in Apple's ecosystem, shoot a lot of video, or simply want the longest battery life on any phone right now. There is no wrong answer here — but there is a right one for you.
